Pip and AI safety
Pip is an AI tutor that sticks to math. The answers on the board are checked by code; the conversation is AI, so it can make mistakes. Here is what Pip is told to do, and how to tell us if something goes wrong.
Pip is an AI
Pip, the tutor in Semper Math, is an artificial intelligence, not a person. Pip talks and listens using a live voice AI model from OpenAI, and a second AI model from Fireworks AI reads the handwriting on the board. Please make sure your learner knows Pip is a computer program before their first lesson.
Semper Math is for learners 13 and older, under a parent or guardian's account.
What Pip is told to do
- Talk only about math, and steer the lesson back to math if it drifts.
- Keep everything age-appropriate, in language that fits the learner's grade.
- Stay away from personal and sensitive topics, and never ask a learner for personal information.
- If a learner says something worrying, gently suggest they talk to a parent or another trusted adult.
Where Pip can go wrong
- The math answers Semper Math shows on the board are worked out and checked by code. That part is reliable.
- Pip's spoken explanations come from an AI model. They are usually right, but they can contain mistakes, mishear a learner, or misread messy handwriting.
- AI instructions are not a guarantee. A model can occasionally say something off topic or unexpected.
- Semper Math supports teachers and parents. It does not replace them, and it is never a source of medical, psychological, or safety advice.
What parents can do
- Stay nearby for the first few lessons, and check in from time to time after that.
- Read the summary after each lesson. It shows what was practiced, what went well, what was hard, and an idea to try at home.
- Open Grown-ups in the app (press and hold) to see progress, change settings, export a learner's information, or delete a learner.
- Talk with your learner about what to do if anything online ever makes them uncomfortable: stop, and tell you.
How to report a concern
If Pip says something wrong, inappropriate, or worrying, email support@sempermath.com with the learner's first name, the date and rough time of the lesson, and what happened. A person reviews every report within 2 business days.
Because we do not record lessons, your description is what we work from, so the more detail the better. If you believe anyone is in danger, contact local emergency services first.
Privacy
Semper Math does not record voices or keep pictures of the board. Our privacy policy explains exactly what is stored, who helps us run the service, and how to delete everything.
